Important: from 1 October 2026 the fees for residence permissions will change.
For an extension of the period of stay or a change of Status of Residence, the fee will rise to 10,000–75,000 yen depending on the period granted, and Permanent Residence Permission will rise to 200,000 yen (currently 6,000 yen for an extension or change, and 10,000 yen for permanent residence).
What matters is the date your application is accepted. Applications accepted on or before 30 September 2026 are charged the old fees.
Note: a reduced fee applies to online applications. Please check the Immigration Services Agency announcements for the current amounts.

If your period of stay has already expired, an ordinary application cannot be used and a different procedure may be required. When you contact us, please tell us exactly how long ago the period expired. We believe the documents explaining your case to the Regional Immigration Services Bureau play a decisive role in obtaining approval. The requirements differ by category of Status of Residence. You need to show that each requirement is fully met, or that an adequate alternative arrangement is in place, and preparing documents that do this effectively takes experience.
